Mark Carney Gains Support from Four Key Cabinet Members in Race for Prime Minister
Mark Carney, a candidate for Liberal leadership, has garnered endorsements from four more current and former cabinet ministers.
Indigenous Services Minister Patty Hajdu, Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Minister Gary Anandasangaree, and former housing minister Sean Fraser publicly expressed their support for Carney on social media. Additionally, Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault endorsed Carney while speaking to reporters at the Liberal cabinet retreat in Montebello, Que.
Earlier this week, Carney also received endorsements from Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly and Emergency Preparedness Minister Harjit Sajjan.
The Liberal party has adjusted the financing regulations for leadership candidates ahead of Thursday’s deadline to submit the $50,000 deposit. They will now accept a sworn affidavit confirming a candidate’s ability to cover the deposit in case of cheque holds by banks.
Six candidates have announced their intention to run for leadership, including Mark Carney, former finance minister Chrystia Freeland, former House leader Karina Gould, and current Liberal MPs Chandra Arya, Jaime Battiste, and former Liberal MP Frank Baylis.
