Mark Carney is the top fundraiser among leadership rivals by a significant margin
Former central banker Mark Carney is leading the fundraising efforts in the federal Liberal leadership race.
His closest competitor seems to be far behind in the fundraising race.
Financial data released by Elections Canada reveals that Carney raised $1.9 million for his leadership campaign, more than eight times the amount raised by his nearest fundraising rival.
Former Liberal House leader Karina Gould collected around $236,000 from over 600 donors, while Montreal businessman Frank Baylis raised over $227,000 from 59 individuals.
Former finance minister Chrystia Freeland, widely seen as Carney’s primary competitor for the leadership, raised just under $227,000 from nearly 300 supporters, while Ruby Dhalla finished last with $115,000 raised.
The data includes all donations received from supporters starting from the beginning of the contest until four weeks before the party’s voting day on March 9.
