Maryland Hate Crimes Task Force Member Suspended for Making Anti-Israel Remarks
Zainab Chaudry made anti-Israel comments in her personal social media accounts that led to her suspension from the Maryland Commission on Hate Crime Response and Prevention. In various posts, Chaudry compared Israel to Nazi Germany and called children killed by the Hamas terrorist group ‘fake Israeli babies.’ As the state director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), Chaudry was appointed to this commission in August, which was designed to address the rise in hate crimes in the state. However, Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown said that Chaudry’s social media posts would disrupt the commission’s ability to fulfill its goals of handling hate crimes. He has the authority to appoint members to the commission and said the members need to be a model for the whole state on how to address bias and hate incidents. Chaudry expressed that her posts were taken out of context and do not reflect her view that was intended to invite hate.
