Melbourne’s Merri-Bek City Council Votes to Display Palestinian Flag
A Melbourne council approved flying the Palestinian flag on a local government building and condemned the words of “senior Israeli politicians and military officials.” However, Zionism Victoria, representing the Jewish community, deemed the motion as “completely” one sided and criticized it for failing to mention and condemn Hamas’ atrocities. Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, leading to Israelis deaths and abductions. Amid the conflict, Merri-bek City Council voted to raise the Palestinian flag on the fourth flag pole of Council’s Coburg Civic Centre. The motion condemned the words of Israeli politicians and military officials and called for an immediate ceasefire and lifting of the “siege on Gaza.” Seven councillors voted in favor while five opposed it. Zionism Victoria argued that the motion ignored the context of the conflict and one-sidedly condemned Israel without mentioning Hamas at all.
