Members of Parliament Actively Participated in Foreign Interference, National Security Committee Finds
A recent report reveals that following their election, some Members of Parliament began knowingly assisting foreign state actors, which included sharing confidential information with Indian officials.
The report, compiled by a committee of MPs and senators with high-level security clearance, states that Canadian intelligence agencies gathered evidence showing that foreign actors built relationships with MPs and senators.
The National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians was tasked with evaluating foreign interference in federal electoral processes, specifically focusing on meddling attempts in the last two elections.
It criticizes Canada’s response to these meddling attempts as inadequate, highlighting “troubling intelligence” indicating that certain parliamentarians participated in foreign efforts to interfere in Canadian politics.
The report highlights a concerning case of an unnamed MP who maintained a relationship with a foreign intelligence officer, where the MP actively provided confidential information to the intelligence officer.
