Metropolitan Police initiates review of investigation into Wimbledon school crash
The parents of the two 8-year-old girls who tragically died in the incident expressed their concerns to the authorities regarding the decision not to charge the driver.
The Metropolitan Police has initiated a review of the investigation into the fatal car crash that occurred at a school in Wimbledon, southwest London, claiming the lives of two 8-year-old girls. This review was announced by the police force on Thursday.
The Met stated that the review was prompted by concerns raised by the families of Nuria Sajjad and Selena Lau, the two young victims of the accident at the Study Prep School on July 6, 2023.
Addressing the families’ concerns, the Met declared in a statement on Thursday, “We are committed to addressing the questions raised by the families of Nuria and Selena, as well as other affected parties. The Specialist Crime Review Group (SCRG) will be conducting a review of the investigation.”
The police force emphasized that their officers had diligently worked through every detail of the incident to ensure a comprehensive investigation.
In a joint statement released following the decision not to press charges against Ms. Freemantle, the families of the girls stated, “We continue to have reservations about the thoroughness of the investigation.
They expressed that Nuria and Selena deserved a more thorough investigation and voiced their disappointment with the decision not to pursue charges.
Ms. Freemantle shared her deep remorse in a statement, explaining that she had no memory of the events following her loss of consciousness.
Last week, Metropolitan Detective Chief Superintendent Clair Kelland disclosed that, based on Ms. Freemantle’s medical records, she could not have foreseen or prevented the seizure.
She emphasized in a statement, “I recognize that some may find this outcome confusing and may feel disappointed by it. However, I want to assure everyone that our officers meticulously reviewed every aspect of the incident to present a thorough investigation to the CPS.
“For charges to be brought in situations like this, there needs to be a level of accountability on the part of the driver, and in this case, such responsibility was not evident.”
The incident occurred during the school’s end-of-term celebrations, and the SUV crashed into a school building, resulting in the tragic loss of two young lives and injuries to several others. This took place while the Wimbledon Tennis Championships were ongoing at a nearby venue.
