Mexican President Refutes Trump’s Claim of Agreement to Close US-Mexico Border

President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, emphasized that their stance is not to close borders but to build bridges between governments and peoples.

Following a conversation between the two leaders, Mexican President Sheinbaum refuted U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s statement that Mexico would shut down its border with the United States.

During a daily news conference, Sheinbaum stated, “It has never been our approach, and of course, we don’t agree with that.” She assured that closing the border was never proposed by Mexico.

Trump had previously mentioned imposing tariffs as a response to issues like illegal immigration, crime, and drug trafficking across the borders.

Trump claimed in his posts that Sheinbaum had agreed to halt migration through Mexico to the U.S., effectively closing the southern border.

Minutes later, Sheinbaum shared on X that she had a productive conversation with Trump, discussing Mexico’s strategies to address the migration crisis and assisting migrants before they reach the border.

She reiterated Mexico’s approach of building bridges between governments and peoples, rather than closing borders.

Sheinbaum also highlighted their cooperation with the Biden-Harris administration, resulting in a significant reduction in border crossings over the past year.

Sheinbaum mentioned potential retaliatory tariffs but expressed a willingness to work with Trump to address the border crisis.

Recently, the Department of Justice indicted eight Chinese companies for manufacturing and distributing fentanyl precursor chemicals, contributing to the opioid epidemic in the United States.

The Chinese Communist Party has been accused of allowing these chemicals to flow into the U.S., Mexico, and Canada, exacerbating the crisis.

China has denied these allegations, emphasizing the mutually beneficial nature of China-U.S. economic and trade cooperation and the detrimental consequences of a trade war.
