Miliband states that Nuclear Power is a Crucial Component of Net Zero Plans
Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, Ed Miliband, emphasized that nuclear power is not only crucial for the green agenda but also for energy security and affordability reasons.
In a speech at the Nuclear Industry Association’s conference, Miliband stated that nuclear power plays an “essential role” in the government’s net-zero strategy. He highlighted the importance of generating clean energy domestically from sources such as nuclear, wind, solar, batteries, tidal stream, hydrogen, and carbon capture.
“Nuclear has a particular role in providing clean, stable, and reliable power,” he added, underscoring its significance for energy security and affordability.
According to the National Energy System Operator’s report, nuclear power will be crucial for the UK to achieve zero carbon energy production by 2030.
‘Door Is Open’
Miliband expressed openness to small modular reactors (SMRs), which are smaller versions of water-cooled reactors that can be transported and installed where needed.
Great British Nuclear is already in talks with bidders for the UK’s SMR program, with decisions expected by Spring 2025.
Addressing nuclear energy industry professionals, Miliband assured, “My department is listening. We want all your ideas for projects that can work and provide value for money.”
Plants Will Stay Open Longer
EDF Energy has decided to extend the operational lives of four nuclear power plants, sustaining 3,000 jobs across the country.
In his speech, Miliband confirmed funding for the development of the Sizewell C plant.

Miliband acknowledged the historic controversy surrounding nuclear power and the differing views within the green movement. While some advocate for phasing out nuclear energy due to safety concerns and cost, others like Reform UK advocate for fast-tracking clean nuclear energy with new SMRs.
The Labour government’s stance on nuclear energy aligns with previous Conservative administrations, emphasizing the safety of nuclear energy and waste storage.
Notably, in 2022, former Prime Minister Boris Johnson emphasized the importance of expanding nuclear energy to enhance the UK’s energy security.
