Minister of Foreign Affairs advises Canadians to evacuate Florida before severe storm
Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly advises Canadians in Florida to evacuate, and urges those planning to travel there to postpone their trips due to the impending impact of Hurricane Milton.
Although the storm has been downgraded to a Category 4 this morning, it is still expected to bring dangerous storm surge, heavy rainfall, and powerful winds.
Hurricane Milton is forecasted to make landfall later today in the Tampa Bay area, which is densely populated with over 3.3 million residents, before moving eastward to affect other urban areas such as Sarasota, Orlando, and Daytona Beach.
Mandatory evacuations have been issued for millions of people in these regions.
Florida is a popular destination for Canadian snowbirds, especially during the winter months, although exact figures of Canadians currently in the area are unknown to Joly’s office.
Joly reassures that her office has been in communication with American authorities, and any Canadians registered with the embassy would have received an email advising them to evacuate.
