Minister of Immigration Miller Supports Trudeau’s Resignation as the ‘Right Decision’ for Canada

Immigration Minister Marc Miller praised Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s decision to resign, calling it the right choice for the nation and Canadians. Miller also commended Trudeau for opting to remain leader until his successor is chosen, describing it as a “profoundly responsible” decision.

During an interview with CTV News on Jan. 7, Miller stated, “It was the right decision for the nation, the right decision for Canadians. This is something that has been at the top of his mind as he’s been asked to reflect on what the best course is for the country.”

On Jan. 6, Trudeau announced his intention to resign once the Liberal Party selected his replacement. He also prorogued Parliament until March 24 at the request of Gov. Gen. Mary Simon. Miller, a longtime friend of Trudeau, acknowledged that Trudeau’s decision to step down was emotionally challenging.

Miller emphasized that Trudeau’s focus was on the country’s best interests rather than his own political legacy or maintaining power. He mentioned that Trudeau had participated in a heartfelt cabinet meeting following his resignation announcement and chose to be part of a cabinet sub-committee on Canada-U.S. relations to address the threat of U.S. tariffs.

Regarding Trudeau’s decision to stay on as prime minister during the leadership transition, Miller highlighted the importance of this move in light of the tariff threats from the U.S., calling it a profoundly responsible decision.

Incoming U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to impose 25 percent tariffs on Canada and Mexico if they do not take sufficient action to secure their borders and stop the flow of illegal drugs and illegal immigration. In recent days, Trump has also escalated his rhetoric that Canada should become the “51st” U.S. state, including by saying on Jan. 7 that he would use “economic force” to make that happen.

Miller was also asked whether he would be joining the Liberal Party’s leadership race, but he said he is “too focused on the job” of immigration minister to consider it. “I would not do that, to a venture leadership bid,” he said.
