Minister Promises Legal Intervention as Sydney Train Delays Expected to Increase

Sydney-siders have been informed that more than 1,000 train services will be impacted by industrial action by the end of the day, with a caution to avoid peak travel times.

The New South Wales (NSW) government has reported that over 1,000 Sydney train services will face disruptions such as cancellations or delays by January 15 due to ongoing industrial action.

These disruptions follow the rejection of a new payment scheme for railway workers by unions including the Rail, Bus, and Train Union (RBTU) and the Electrical Trades Union (ETU.

Officials stated at a press conference on January 15 that the industrial action is expected to continue for at least three more days, with the situation likely to deteriorate.

As the day progresses towards peak hours, commuters have been advised by the government to avoid unnecessary travel and to commute early if it is essential.

Penny Sharpe, Leader of the Government in the Legislative Council, mentioned that legal options would be pursued to resume train operations.

The government’s offer of an annual 15 percent increase for rail workers over four years has been described as a “generous offer.”
