‘Misjudged as a ‘Nutcase’: Pandemic Mandates Create Rivalry, Foster Unexpected Bonds’
Amid the pandemic, the issue of COVID-19 vaccinations and government mandates and restrictions brought about divisions that resulted in broken friendships and strained family relationships. Even now, social media posts continue to reveal instances where individuals are being ostracized by their own families due to their stance on COVID.
One such individual is Melissa Martens, a farmer residing in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, who made the personal decision to opt out of getting vaccinated. The rift between her and her sister and father began in the early stages of the pandemic.
Melissa shared, “My family members supported the lockdowns and agreed with every measure implemented by the federal government and [Premier] Scott Moe.”
