Montreal Dockworkers to Cease All Overtime Work Amid Extended Negotiations
Dockworkers at the Port of Montreal plan to stop all overtime work later this week as a tactic to pressure management during contract talks.
The union representing around 1,200 longshore workers at the port has given notice that the overtime strike will begin at 7 a.m. ET on Thursday and will continue indefinitely.
Michel Murray, a spokesperson for the union local, stated that the Maritime Employers Association is delaying negotiations, and the job action is intended to increase pressure to reach an agreement.
He mentioned that scheduling is a major issue in the bargaining sessions, which resumed on Friday with federal mediators present.
These discussions picked up after a three-day strike last week at two terminals that handle 41% of container traffic at the Port of Montreal.
The dockworkers have been working without a contract since December 31.
