Montreal Liberal MP Anthony Housefather appointed as new Antisemitism Adviser

Liberal MP Anthony Housefather expresses his anticipation to have a significant impact as the government’s new special adviser on Jewish community relations and antisemitism.

His appointment to this role was announced by the Prime Minister’s Office on July 5, outlining that Mr. Housefather will provide advice to the prime minister and cabinet while collaborating with the Jewish community.

Being Jewish himself, Mr. Housefather has been vocal about the escalating antisemitism in Canada, particularly since the conflict between Israel and Hamas commenced in October.

This appointment follows a period of contemplation after Mr. Housefather contemplated leaving the Liberal caucus due to feelings of anger and isolation following an NDP motion regarding the Israel-Gaza war.

Ultimately, he decided to remain a Liberal and collaborate with the government to address the pressing issue of antisemitism in Canada.

In May, Mr. Housefather initiated a parliamentary committee study on antisemitism at university campuses.

Mr. Housefather has also been a target of antisemitic attacks, such as recent incidents where he was labeled a Nazi and told to leave Canada.

He welcomed his new role, which involves collaborating with Deborah Lyons, the government’s special envoy on combating antisemitism, in ensuring the safety of Jewish Canadians in all aspects of life.

In response to the contentious NDP motion that sparked division, Mr. Housefather criticized its one-sided demand for Canada to recognize the state of Palestine.

While improvements were made to the motion, Mr. Housefather could not fully support it due to the rushed nature of the changes that prevented thorough debate.
