Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante Will Not Run for Re-election in 2025
Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante has announced that she will not seek a third term in the upcoming municipal elections next year.
Plante’s office has confirmed this decision, which she will officially announce at a news conference scheduled for 11:30 a.m. at city hall.
As the first elected female mayor of the city, Plante took office in 2017 after defeating the incumbent mayor Denis Coderre, a former Liberal cabinet minister.
Plante and her Projet Montréal party were re-elected in 2021.
In addition to her role as mayor of Montreal, Plante also serves as the mayor of the downtown Ville-Marie borough and has been the leader of Projet Montréal since December 2016.
She was initially elected to the city council in 2013.
