Montreal’s Université du Québec Seeking Injunction Against Pro-Palestinian Camp
Université du Québec à Montréal has initiated legal action against pro-Palestinian demonstrators who established a camp on its urban campus just over a week ago.
UQAM is seeking an injunction from the Quebec Superior Court to prevent protesters from erecting tents and other materials within a three-meter radius of campus buildings.
Furthermore, it is requesting that protesters cease obstructing access to the campus, damaging surveillance cameras, vandalizing property, and destroying university assets.
According to UQAM, protesters are endangering safety by blocking an emergency exit, possessing gasoline canisters and metal bars, and potentially overloading the university’s electrical system with unauthorized extension cords.
Since the encampment was established on May 12, protesters have been demanding that the university sever ties with Israeli institutions, reveal its connections to Israel, and urge the Quebec government to cancel plans for a diplomatic office in the country.
The university’s court application indicates that the inner courtyard of its science center is currently occupied by around 40 tents.
