More Attention Needed for Chinese Interference in Our Democracy
Commentary
Recognizing a crisis can often be challenging, much like the frog in a pot of slowly boiling water. We seem to be heading towards a significant threat to our democracy without fully realizing it.
The issue at hand is interference in our electoral system. Despite warnings from the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), reports such as the one by former Gov. Gen. David Johnston, and inquiries like the Hogue commission, this critical problem is largely ignored in the current political discourse.
Recent incidents, such as AI campaigns for or against Liberal leader Mark Carney and a candidate advocating for a Chinese bounty on a perceived political dissident, are just the tip of the iceberg. The evidence continues to mount.
Yet, the focus on this issue in debates and campaign speeches is conspicuously absent. Why is this threat not receiving the attention it deserves?
Speculations about ties to the People’s Republic of China or other entities aside, the lack of acknowledgment and action from political candidates is concerning.
The lack of concern among those vying for leadership is evident. The absence of a solution to this escalating threat over the years is alarming. Why are actions like closing Chinese consulates or prosecuting individuals engaging in foreign interference not being discussed?
While there are numerous issues facing Canadians in this election, the neglect of national security is conspicuous. If the integrity of our democracy is compromised by external influences, can we truly trust the election outcomes?
Experts may claim that interference doesn’t impact election results, but how can they be certain? Given the unknown extent of foreign influence on voters, such assurances are questionable.
Canada has capable intelligence agencies staffed by dedicated professionals, yet the lack of action from the government is concerning.
It is time for a serious discussion on foreign interference in our electoral process. Hold political leaders accountable and demand solutions to this looming threat. Our democratic independence is at stake.
