Mount Ibu Eruption Forces Evacuation of 7 Villages in Indonesia
Two eruptions occurred, leading to the evacuation of residents from seven villages in Indonesia. The first eruption of Mount Ibu volcano happened on May 18, followed by a second eruption just 24 minutes later, with columns of ash reaching high altitudes. In response, a joint team of rescue officials and armed forces conducted the evacuation process.
Over 1,000 residents from the seven villages were evacuated as a precaution. The evacuation lasted through May 19, although the exact number of residents evacuated was not specified by the National Disaster Agency (BNPB).
No casualties were reported, and the agency emphasized the importance of remaining calm and vigilant during the situation. The alert level for Mount Ibu remains at the highest level, urging tourists and residents to stay away from the volcano and use protective gear in case of ash fall.
Earlier this month, a volcanic eruption on Mount Ruang led to school closures and evacuations, affecting several villages and airports. Residents near Mount Ibu were warned about potential dangers from volcanic clouds and tsunamis, emphasizing the need to stay at a safe distance from the crater.
