MP Housefather Contemplating Future with the Liberal Party Following Middle East Motion Vote

Quebec Liberal MP Anthony Housefather is currently taking time to “reflect” on his future within the Liberal party following the passing of a heavily amended NDP motion on Palestinian statehood in the House of Commons on Mar. 18.

Among the three Liberals who voted against the final motion was Mr. Housefather. The motion, which focused on progress towards a two-state solution instead of recognizing a Palestinian state, passed despite their votes.

The other two dissenting Liberals, former public safety minister Marco Mendicino and Manitoba MP Ben Carr, expressed disappointment with the last-minute amendment process. However, they have no plans to change their political affiliation.

On the other hand, Mr. Housefather felt uncertain about remaining in the caucus when his fellow Liberals gave the NDP a standing ovation for the motion, marking a first in his life.

Mr. Housefather believes that instead of amending the motion, Liberals should have voted it down altogether. He argues that the original version did not adequately address the existential threat facing Israel and Jewish communities worldwide.
