MPs Probe Antisemitism at Universities as Jewish Students Report Feeling Unsafe
Jewish students from major Canadian universities gathered on Parliament Hill on May 8 to voice concerns about the increase in antisemitism on their campuses amidst the Israel-Hamas conflict.
They were joined by several Liberal MPs, including Anthony Housefather, who spearheaded a parliamentary committee inquiry into antisemitism on campuses starting this Thursday.
Mr. Housefather referenced reports from Jewish students and faculty detailing a significant uptick in antisemitic incidents following Hamas’s attack on Israel on Oct. 7.
Recent protests at schools, organized by students and pro-Palestinian activists against Israel’s actions in Gaza, have raised alarms among administrators and Jewish leaders due to the presence of antisemitic chants and slogans.
Claire Frankel, a student at McGill University, noted hearing slogans that dehumanize Jews but believes that many students are protesting with good intentions for lasting peace.
