NASA Administrator Warns that China May Seek to Establish Moon Surveillance and Military Presence
NASA has issued a warning about China potentially masking secret military activities as civilian endeavors to gain control over parts of the moon.
“We believe that a lot of their so-called civilian space program is a military program,” stated Bill Nelson, the administrator of the space agency. “And I think, in effect, we are in a race.”
Mr. Nelson made these comments during a budget hearing before a House Appropriations Committee, where he argued that NASA would need over $25 billion, approximately 0.4 percent of the total U.S. government budget, to compete against China.
“China has made extraordinary advancements, especially in the last 10 years. However, they are very secretive,” Nelson added.
Concerns have been escalating over China’s potential dominance on the moon, particularly with the country’s aggressive behavior on the international stage in various instances.
China has also been adamant about claiming sovereignty over different Asian regions, sparking tensions with neighboring nations.
