NDP Leader Singh Willing to Collaborate With Liberals on Addressing Trump Tariffs Relief
NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh expressed his willingness to collaborate with the Liberal government on a plan to assist Canadians affected by U.S. tariffs. However, he maintained his stance of voting non-confidence in the government.
During a press conference on Jan. 28, Singh stated, “I’ve made it clear that I will be voting against the government at the earliest opportunity.” He urged the Liberals to involve opposition leaders in discussions about implementing a support plan for workers.
Addressing concerns about U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat to impose tariffs on Canadian exports, Singh emphasized the need for a concrete plan to aid impacted businesses and workers. He acknowledged not having engaged with other opposition leaders on this matter.
In December, Singh had announced that his party would table a non-confidence motion to bring down the Liberal government. Reaffirming his position, he reiterated his intention to vote against the government during an interview on CBC’s “Power & Politics” on Jan. 20.

The New Democrats had a supply-and-confidence agreement with the Liberals in 2021, which they terminated in September 2024. They subsequently supported the Liberals in non-confidence motions put forth by the Conservatives. Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet stated that he would not support the Liberal government in a confidence vote, urging an early election.

Blanchet also mentioned that potential Liberal Party leaders Mark Carney and Chrystia Freeland could call for an election post their race on March 9. Trudeau announced his resignation plans on Jan. 6.
