NDP National Council Set to Gather Monday Evening to Select Interim Leader
The national council of the NDP is set to convene tonight to select an interim leader.
Jagmeet Singh declared on election night that he would resign once an interim leader is appointed.
In the April 28 election, the NDP saw its representation drop to just seven seats, losing its official party status.
Two party officials reported that the NDP caucus held two meetings last week to discuss interim leadership until a full leadership race can occur.
Singh is among over a dozen NDP MPs who lost their seats during one of the party’s most disappointing election performances.
Former MP Charlie Angus commented that the party has disconnected from its primary supporters, placing too much emphasis on the leader’s personality.
This past weekend, the Alberta NDP members voted overwhelmingly in favor of allowing individuals to decline automatic membership in the federal party when registering at the provincial level.
