Nearly Ready to Begin Rebuilding: Ambitious Centre Block Renovation Project

OTTAWA—The major restoration of Parliament’s Centre Block is almost ready to move into the reconstruction phase following the completion of demolition, primary excavation, and abatement.

The renovation project is expected to cost between $4.5 billion and $5 billion, which includes the construction of a new visitor center.

Currently, workers are busy installing hundreds of steel supports to uphold the building while the renovations take place.

Precise excavation work has started to clear out rock and earth around the foundation of the Peace Tower to make space for the upcoming visitor center.

All heritage items have been safely removed from the building for preservation and necessary restoration work.

Upon completion in 2030 or 2031, the new Centre Block is anticipated to be a fully accessible parliament with a modern IT infrastructure integrated behind the existing heritage facade.
