New Caledonia Faces Prison Kidnapping, Arson, and Riots Amid France’s Push for Election Changes
The French Pacific territory has been experiencing widespread unrest, including demonstrations, marches, arson, a prison kidnapping, and clashes with security forces.
As socialist-led pro-independence supporters express their frustration over proposed voting changes by the French National Assembly, the situation in New Caledonia has escalated. Hostage-taking incidents, arson attacks on businesses like car dealerships, school closures, public service shutdowns, and protest marches have become commonplace.
The unrest has led to the closure of schools, public services, and airports, causing panic buying and long queues at shopping centers reminiscent of the pandemic.
More than 200 fires have been set, leading to the destruction of businesses like a Porsche and Audi dealership and a carbonated drinks company. The violence culminated in protests that involved thousands of people and was part of the “Ten Days for Kanaky” pro-independence campaign.
To maintain order, roadblocks have been set up, and a curfew from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. has been imposed by authorities.
The unrest began on May 10 when police came under fire in Saint Louis and Saint Michel. Since then, clashes have continued, with numerous injuries reported among law enforcement officers.
French High Commissioner Louis Le Franc has visited the region to call for calm and has requested reinforcements from Paris to restore law and order.
The ongoing crisis in New Caledonia is rooted in the long-standing issue of independence. The population remains divided on the matter, as evidenced by previous referenda results.
The recent focus of the unrest is a proposed electoral reform that aims to change the voting eligibility criteria, sparking fears among pro-independence groups that it could potentially sway the balance of power in favor of those opposing independence.
The government’s efforts to push through the reform have been met with strong opposition, leading to widespread demonstrations and violence across the territory.
Despite President Emmanuel Macron’s announcement of putting the electoral reform on hold and seeking dialogue with all stakeholders, tensions remain high in New Caledonia.
The situation has attracted international attention, with concerns raised by foreign officials and the cancellation of visits by foreign delegations due to the escalating unrest.
