New High-Tech AI Speed Cameras Implemented to Prevent Distracted Driving
The UK is bracing for a surge in distracted driving convictions as AI-led speed cameras are being deployed nationwide. British drivers are being warned about an increase in convictions for illegal mobile phone use and failure to wear seatbelts due to the installation of new “spot” cameras developed by Acusensus, an Australian tech company that uses cutting-edge AI technology to detect these offenses.
While the cameras use AI to identify potential violations, all flagged images are reviewed by a human before penalties are issued. These AI-led cameras are currently being introduced across 25 routes in northern England after successful trials at various sites in England and Scotland.
Analysis from these trials indicates that there could be roughly 50,000 cases of drivers using hand-held phones and around half a million motorists driving without seatbelts daily. Last year, Vision Zero South West detected nearly 300 drivers using mobile phones or not wearing seatbelts in just three days.
Adrian Leisk, head of road safety for Devon and Cornwall Police, believes that these new cameras will send a clear message to offenders who disregard the law and endanger lives. Similarly, RAC’s road safety spokesman Simon Williams emphasizes the necessity of technology in enforcing road safety. Driving safety expert Gary Digva warns that the introduction of more advanced cameras across Britain will likely lead to a rise in distracted driving convictions.
Drivers caught using handheld devices in the UK face a six-point penalty and a £200 fine, while newly qualified drivers risk losing their license. It’s crucial for drivers to avoid distractions on the road to prevent fines, points on their license, or potential driving disqualifications.
