New Prime Minister to be Elected in Solomon Islands as Pro-China Leader Steps Down

Manasseh Sogavare, the Prime Minister of the Solomon Islands, has withdrawn from the race to lead the next government. The pro-China prime minister made this decision following the formation of a coalition by opposition parties aiming to take power.

Despite his party, the Ownership, Unity, and Responsibility Party (OUR Party), winning 15 seats in the recent elections, Mr. Sogavare did not secure the 26-seat majority required to form a government. The opposition CARE coalition, made up of the Solomon Islands Democratic Party (SIDP), UMI 4 Change (U4C), and the Democratic Alliance Party (DAP), garnered 13 seats.

In a press conference held on Monday in the capital Honiara, Mr. Sogavare announced his decision. The Solomon Islands Foreign Minister Jeremiah Manele, representing a coalition led by the OUR Party, will now run for the prime ministership.

The CARE coalition, along with the Solomon Islands United Party (SIUP), has formed a coalition government with 20 seats. Matthew Wale, the leader of SIDP, has been selected as the coalition’s candidate for prime minister.

The newly-elected lawmakers are set to vote on May 2 to elect a new prime minister.

China

The outcome of the May 2 vote holds significant geopolitical implications, especially for the United States and Australia, given China’s increased influence in the Solomon Islands during Mr. Sogavare’s tenure.

In 2019, Mr. Sogavare switched diplomatic relations from Taiwan to China, raising concerns among U.S. officials about regional stability. Subsequently, he signed a security agreement with China in 2022, leading to further apprehensions by the U.S. Institute of Peace.
