New South Wales Gearing Up for a Wet and Wild Weekend.
New South Wales (NSW) is preparing for a weekend of turbulent and rainy weather, with the potential for flooding, following a week where some regions saw more than 100 millimetres of rain.
The Bureau of Meteorology predicts that the Illawarra, Hunter, Central Coast, and Greater Sydney areas could receive a similar amount of rainfall on the night of May 4 and May 5.
“We anticipate significant impacts, such as flooding, blocked roads, and traffic disruptions on Sunday,” stated Senior Meteorologist Angus Hines.
Rainfall data from the bureau indicates that Observatory Hill received nearly 53 millimetres of rain from April 29 to May 3, with some areas receiving over 100 millimetres in total for the week.
Despite the conditions, the Sydney Half Marathon is scheduled to proceed on May 5, with over 19,500 registered runners. Organizers are keeping a close eye on the situation.
“Currently, there are no indications that any adjustments will be necessary for the event,” a spokesperson stated.
“Participants are advised to be prepared for a wet race and adapt to the conditions. The team is confident that the event will proceed as planned.”
Thunderstorm warnings are in effect for central and northern inland areas of the state, with slow-moving storms expected to bring heavy localized rainfall and a risk of flash floods.
The NSW State Emergency Service is actively monitoring forecasts and preparing resources and personnel for potential challenges.
