NGOs Express Concerns Over South Korea’s Alleged Involvement in China’s Forced Organ Harvesting

A recent report has exposed how countries in the free world are involved in China’s practice of forced organ harvesting. Non-governmental organizations have called on the United Nations to urge the South Korean government to cease its complicity in this unethical practice. The Korea Association for Ethical Organ Transplants (KAEOT) and Doctors Against Forced Organ Harvesting (DAFOH) have expressed concerns over the Korean government’s role in the Chinese regime’s organ transplant abuse. They submitted a report to the UN Human Rights Committee (UNHRC) ahead of the committee’s session in Geneva next month. The report not only impacts the Korean government but also addresses forced organ harvesting in China, which relies on demand from nations worldwide. The report highlights the exceptional growth of China’s organ transplant industry, with hospitals able to provide a matched organ in just a few days, despite minimal organ donation in the country. South Korean cable network TV Chosun’s 2017 investigation revealed how Korean patients traveled to China for transplants due to shorter wait times. China is the most popular destination country for overseas transplantation, with Korea being the second-largest departure country. Notably, China did not have an official organ donation and distribution system until 2015. The Chinese regime has been accused of killing prisoners of conscience, including Falun Gong adherents, to supply the transplant market. The China Tribunal—an independent people’s tribunal—concluded in 2019 that the Chinese regime had been and continues to commit crimes against humanity through its forced organ harvesting practices. The report also criticizes the Chinese officials’ call to strengthen organ donation and transplant cooperation through the Belt and Road Initiative, with the involvement of the authorities in Busan, South Korea. The report emphasizes the risk of inadvertently assisting China’s forced organ harvesting and involving South Koreans in this crime. The co-founder and executive director of Doctors Against Forced Organ Harvesting, Dr. Torsten Trey, stated that countries in the free world are passively allowing China’s forced organ harvesting to occur. However, he believes that if nations choose to adhere to existing laws, they can refuse complicity in this unethical practice.
