Northern Territory Budget Prioritizes Big Police Funding for Crime Prevention
Chief Minister and Treasurer Eva Lawler announced that the Northern Territory will see a historic investment in its police force, the largest ever in its history. This investment is part of a $570 million allocation over the next five years to address the pressing issues of crime and anti-social behavior in the region.
Lawler emphasized the importance of addressing the concerns of Territorians regarding crime reduction, stating that the upcoming budget will reflect a significant increase in funding for the police force. The increase in funding comes amidst growing crime rates and instances of anti-social behavior that have plagued various Territory communities, including the recent incidents in Alice Springs.
Following clashes between rival families triggered by a fatal car crash, the government took action by imposing a three-week curfew and deploying additional police resources to the Red Centre. The future plans outlined in the budget include the addition of 200 sworn officers, 25 emergency call takers, and upgrades to infrastructure and equipment within the Territory’s police force.
Furthermore, the budget will allocate $1.2 billion to public order and safety, $723 million to building safer communities, and an additional $1.1 million to private security for increased patrols. Lawler underscored the comprehensive and common-sense approach of the plan to enhance community safety and reduce crime, emphasizing her commitment to keeping Territorians safe by providing law enforcement with the necessary resources, technology, and equipment.
