NSW Government Invests Millions in Installing 671 New Electric Vehicle Chargers
The New South Wales government has allocated $4.1 million, alongside $8 million in private investment, for the construction of new electric vehicle charging stations.
As part of a push to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, the New South Wales (NSW) government is supporting the installation of nearly 700 new electric vehicle (EV) chargers in the largest single deployment in Australia.
The rising demand for EVs is a major driver behind this initiative.
Electric Vehicle Council of Australia reports a consistent growth in electric car sales, rising from zero purchases in 2013 to 8.3% of car sales in 2023.
The number of new EV purchases in Australia more than doubled in 2023 compared to 2022, with over 180,000 EVs now on Australian roads and an expected annual market growth rate of double.
The latest project by the NSW government involves setting up 671 charging stations at 391 locations, costing $4.1 million (US$2.7 million) and matched with $8 million in private funding.
This move is aimed at encouraging motorists to switch to electric vehicles.
Minister for Climate Change and Energy Penny Sharpe mentioned that more grants will be given for the expansion of charging stations to further promote EV adoption.
