NSW Police apprehend 554 suspects in alleged domestic violence cases
554 alleged domestic violence offenders were arrested in a four-day police blitz named Operation Amarok VI in New South Wales.
Charges included assault on a 62-year-old woman by a 55-year-old man, multiple offences like domestic violence, possession of imitation firearm, and drugs by a 53-year-old man, and a stabbing incident by a 23-year-old woman on a 37-year-old female relative.
Operation Amarok VI took place from May 15 to 18 across various police areas and districts in the state.
The operation involved officers from different units like Domestic Violence High Risk Offenders Team (DVHROT), Raptor Squad, Youth Command, Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, and the Police Transport Command.
A total of 1,070 charges were laid, with 226 of those arrested wanted for serious domestic violence offences.
Minister for police and counter-terrorism, Yasmin Catley, emphasized the seriousness with which the NSW police force handles domestic and family violence, stating that such behaviors will not be tolerated.
Deputy Commissioner Peter Thurtell, the NSW police executive sponsor for domestic and family violence, highlighted that the operation targeted some of the state’s worst domestic violence offenders who pose a significant threat.
Domestic Violence NSW reported 17 women murdered through domestic violence in 2023, underscoring the need for intervention programs and community education as preventive measures.
Several significant arrests were made, including a man charged with assault, a man threatening a woman with an imitation firearm, and a woman charged with assaulting another woman.
