NSW Police Provide Media Briefing on Bondi Junction Stabbing
The Bondi Junction attack on April 13 resulted in the deaths of seven people, including the perpetrator. One baby sustained serious injuries.
Attack Was Unlikely Driven By ‘Any Particular Motivation, Ideology’
The individual responsible for the Bondi Junction attack was identified as Joel Couchy, a 40-year-old man from Queensland who moved to New South Wales (NSW) in March, as confirmed by Assistant Commissioner Anthony Cooke during a press briefing.
Assistant Commissioner Anthony Cooke stated that the police have been in contact with the attacker’s family, who are cooperating with the investigation.
He emphasized that there is no evidence to suggest that this incident was an act of terrorism, and it is likely that the perpetrator had mental health issues.
“We have not found any information or intelligence indicating that this attack was motivated by any specific ideology. It is apparent that the offender has mental health concerns,” he stated.
“Our investigation into the offender’s profile is ongoing, but it seems evident to us at this stage that mental health issues are a significant factor in this tragedy,” Cooke added.
“Further inquiries will continue throughout the day.
Female Officer Who Shot Attacker Dead Shows ‘Enormous Courage’
The authorities also praised the bravery displayed by the female police officer who neutralized the attacker.
“We are immensely proud of the officer’s actions last night, and she will receive the necessary support,” Cooke expressed.
Previously, NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb commended the officer for her “enormous courage and bravery.”
“She will undergo a formal interview,” Cooke stated. “She had all the required resources at the time and will be interviewed tomorrow; she was likely in close proximity to the scene and was the first responder.”
“Given her seniority, it is not uncommon for senior officers to take charge of such situations and take action.”
Police Confirm Detail Of The Victims
During a media briefing at 8:30 AM on April 14, Assistant Commissioner Anthony Cooke confirmed that there were six victims of the Bondi Junction attack that occurred at 8PM on April 13. This includes “five deceased women, one man, and the perpetrator.”
“We are currently in the process of contacting and supporting the families of the victims, two of whom appear to have no relatives in Australia,” Cooke stated.
“Additionally, a young child is in a serious but stable condition in the hospital, and our thoughts are also with them and their families,” he added.
Cooke urged individuals with any pertinent information to come forward and collaborate with law enforcement or contact Crimestoppers.
