Ofcom finds GB News shows presented by MPs in violation of broadcasting rules
GB News criticized the decision, stating that it goes against established precedent and raises serious questions about Ofcom’s oversight over its own regulations.
Ofcom found that five episodes of GB News programs hosted by Conservative MPs breached broadcasting rules.
The regulator identified violations in two episodes of “State of the Nation,” two episodes of “Friday Morning with Esther and Phil,” and one episode of “Saturday Morning with Esther and Phil” aired in May and June 2023.
The programs were hosted by Conservative MPs Esther McVey, Philip Davies, and former House of Commons leader Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg.
According to Rules 5.1 and 5.3 of the Broadcasting Code, news must be presented with impartiality, and politicians cannot act as news presenters, interviewers, or reporters unless there is editorial justification.
‘Chilling’
GB News expressed concerns about the rule being a threat to freedom of speech and the integrity of broadcasting in the UK.
Ofcom stated that GB News allowed politicians to present news content without due impartiality, risking the credibility of broadcast news.
Ofcom cautioned GB News that repeated breaches of the rules may lead to sanctions.
Impartiality
GB News expressed strong concerns about Ofcom’s decisions, emphasizing its commitment to featuring serving politicians hosting programs.
The channel criticized Ofcom for potentially hindering free speech and media plurality, urging the regulator to uphold its duty to promote alternative voices.
GB News accused Ofcom of arbitrarily changing its impartiality test and expanding regulations rather than enforcing established definitions.
Scrutiny
GB News has faced scrutiny from Ofcom regarding vaccine-related claims and freedom of speech issues.
Earlier investigations found breaches of impartiality rules in broadcasts involving politicians and controversial statements about COVID-19.
The TV channel was previously reprimanded for interviews with political figures ahead of significant events such as the Budget.
Additionally, claims made on the channel about COVID-19 vaccines were flagged as potentially harmful.
