Olivia Chow Elected Mayor of Toronto
Olivia Chow has been elected the new mayor of Toronto. With almost all of the polls reporting, Chow, a former Toronto city councillor and NDP MP, had over 264,000 votes, or just over 37 percent of the total vote.
But it was a close race much of the evening, with Ana Bailao, a former city councillor, holding the lead through part of the evening. With most of the polls in, Bailao had just over 231,000 votes, or just over 32 percent of the vote.
The third-place finisher was former police chief Mark Saunders, who had just 61,000 votes, or just over 8 percent of total votes.
Journalist Anthony Furey, a political newcomer, was fourth with over 35,000 votes, or just under 5 percent.
Chow ran on a platform that included 25,000 new rental homes, and more help for the homeless.
More to come.
