President-elect Donald Trump has threatened to impose a 25 percent tariff on Canadian goods, prompting Ontario Premier Doug Ford to emphasize a positive approach to Canada-U.S. relations during a press conference in Mississauga on Nov. 28.
Ford continued his stance by launching a new ad campaign on Dec. 2 that highlights mutual cooperation. The ad portrays Ontario as a partner to the United States, connected through shared history, values, and vision, providing stability and security amidst global uncertainties.
The ad was shared on social media platform X, with Ford expressing Ontario’s readiness for the new U.S. administration and the campaign’s focus on bringing back jobs, promoting trade, enhancing security, and fostering prosperity through collaboration.
Trump’s announcement of tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports until issues with illegal drugs and migrants are resolved stirred concern among Canada’s premiers about the impact on their economies, including Ontario’s auto sector and other sectors across the country. They urged the federal government to take action to prevent the tariffs.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau flew to Florida on Nov. 29 to meet with Trump at Mar-a-Lago, resulting in positive statements from both leaders about their commitment to addressing issues and enhancing border security.
Ford reiterated the importance of stronger border measures during a press conference in Mississauga on Nov. 28, highlighting Ontario’s role in supplying critical minerals for U.S. technology.
