Ontario Doctor’s Decision on COVID Lockdowns Reserved
An Ontario doctor who was critical of COVID lockdowns argued her case in court on April 10.
Dr. Kulvinder Kaur Gill was attempting to have three cautions removed from her public file by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO). These cautions were imposed after Dr. Gill posted two tweets in 2020 questioning COVID lockdowns. Dr. Gill gained attention during the pandemic for her challenges to the government’s public health measures.
The panel of judges at the Divisional Court of the Ontario Superior Court has not yet released a decision regarding the judicial review.
Dr. Gill, a specialist in pediatrics, allergy, and clinical immunology, had a significant following on X (formerly known as Twitter) where she expressed her concerns about the government’s pandemic response, particularly regarding lockdowns and mandates.
As a result, she was the subject of seven public complaints filed with the CPSO, in addition to an investigation by the college’s registrar. The ICRC reviewed all eight cases in February 2021.
Despite dismissing five complaints, the committee ordered three cautions to be placed on Dr. Gill’s public file.
Ms. Bildy emphasized the importance of scientific debate and democratic values, supporting Dr. Gill’s position that her tweets were evidence-based and necessary for public discourse.
The controversial tweets from August 2020 questioned the rationale behind COVID lockdowns, suggesting there was no scientific basis for their prolonged implementation.
Contrary to being labeled as an “anti-vaxxer,” Dr. Gill’s stance on routine childhood vaccines and COVID vaccines for high-risk individuals with informed consent was clarified by Libertas Law.
The context of Dr. Gill’s tweets regarding vaccines highlighted the absence of authorized COVID-19 vaccines globally in August 2020, emphasizing the uncertainties and challenges posed by the evolving pandemic situation.
The CPSO defended its actions, citing evidence from lockdowns in other countries as effective measures against the spread of COVID-19, while critiquing Dr. Gill’s statements as misleading and irresponsible.
