Ontario Prohibits Drug Consumption sites Close to Schools and Child-Care Centres
The Ontario government announces a ban on drug consumption sites within a 200-metre radius of schools and child-care centres.
Jones cited concerns from parents about children’s proximity to these sites, affecting their safety and well-being.
Ontario currently operates 22 supervised drug consumption sites, with approximately nine facing closure due to the new regulations.
Ontario will also restrict new Consumption and Treatment Services (CTS) sites from launching or taking part in federal safer supply initiatives,” Jones explained.
Addiction Treatment Hubs
Jones disclosed a $378 million investment in creating 19 new homeless and addiction recovery treatment hubs, known as HART hubs.
The HART hubs prioritize recovery and offer various services such as primary care, mental health and addiction care, social services, shelter beds, and supportive housing, but do not provide drug consumption or needle exchange.
Furthermore, Jones mentioned that the nine slated drug consumption sites near schools or child-care centres could transition into HART hubs.
