OPP, Montreal Police Arrest 31 Individuals in Project Volcano Targeting Car Theft Suspects from Ontario
Ontario Provincial Police and Montreal police have announced the arrest of 31 individuals in Quebec who had outstanding warrants for car thefts and other serious crimes in Ontario.
The arrests took place as part of Project Volcano, a joint operation by police forces from Ontario and Quebec over three days in the greater Montreal area.
Many of those apprehended in Project Volcano were Quebec residents who had been previously arrested in Ontario for vehicle theft and other offenses but had failed to make court appearances in Ontario.
Authorities state that a significant number of stolen vehicles in the Greater Toronto Area were allegedly taken by suspects residing in Quebec who then transported the cars to the Port of Montreal for export.
OPP deputy commissioner Marty Kearns revealed that nearly 3,000 vehicles have been reported stolen in Ontario in the last seven weeks.
During a news conference on March 22, Mr. Kearns expressed concerns about the speed at which criminals can steal cars using various methods to bypass anti-theft technology.
