Ottawa Bans Additional 179 Types of Firearms, Launches Classification Investigation
The Liberal government has prohibited an additional 179 firearm varieties, expanding the list of banned guns deemed too unsafe for hunters or sport shooters.
According to the government, all current and future versions of the newly added firearms are now prohibited, regardless of whether they are specifically listed in regulations.
Since May 2020, the federal government has banned around 2,500 types of guns classified as assault-style firearms.
A federal buyback program will offer fair compensation to current owners of these banned firearms.
The program is currently open to businesses, with plans to extend it to individual owners this spring.
Additionally, the government has announced a review of firearms classification to update the legal framework for banned guns and address any loopholes in the law.
