Ottawa Refuses to Commit to Trilateral Summit in 2024 as Mexico and US Prepare for Elections
Canada has not yet set a date for the North American Leaders’ Summit, which raises the possibility that it may not take place this year.
The hosting duties for the annual series of meetings on transnational issues such as immigration and drug trafficking rotate between Canada, the U.S., and Mexico.
Last year, Canada agreed to host the next summit, and Mexican Foreign Affairs Minister Alicia Bárcena mentioned in February that it would be held in Quebec in April.
However, Global Affairs Canada has not confirmed whether the summit will take place this year or disclosed the location.
Mexico is heading to the polls on June 2, and the U.S. election is scheduled for Nov. 5.
Bruce Heyman, the U.S. ambassador to Canada during the Obama administration, believes that it is unlikely for the summit to happen this year, but emphasizes that the most important thing is for the meeting to eventually occur.
