Outdoor Smoking Ban Being Considered, According to Starmer
The government will make decisions regarding smoking in pub gardens and outside stadiums, causing publicans to criticize the idea as “bonkers” and potentially harmful to their trade.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has announced that the government will consider implementing an outdoor smoking ban as part of a new bill aimed at eliminating smoking and reducing pressure on the NHS.
Business leaders have expressed concerns, stating that banning outdoor smoking in beer gardens and outside stadiums would further hurt pubs and bars that have already suffered from lockdowns and economic challenges.
‘A Huge Burden’
Starmer emphasized the significant impact smoking has on the NHS and taxpayers, with over 80,000 deaths annually attributed to smoking-related causes. He stressed the importance of preventive measures and hinted at forthcoming decisions in this area.
He highlighted the strain on the NHS and the need to shift towards a more preventative healthcare model to alleviate the burden on the healthcare system.

‘A Libertarian Issue’
Tim Martin, the founder of JD Wetherspoon, raised concerns about the proposed ban, calling it a “libertarian issue” that questions individual liberties when it comes to potential dangers.
He noted that the ban may not significantly impact his business but stressed the importance of balancing health concerns with personal freedom.
He highlighted the impact of previous smoking bans and expressed caution about extending such bans to outdoor areas.
Moreover, former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s attempts to outlaw cigarette sales faced opposition on various grounds, including concerns about enforcement and practicality.
According to health charity ASH, the indoor smoking ban in England resulted in reduced hospital admissions for heart attacks, emphasizing the potential benefits of smoking restrictions.
