Over 100,000 Phone Users Face Risk as 3G Networks are Decommissioned

People in Australia with a device that can only use 3G will soon face challenges connecting to their network or making emergency Triple Zero (000) calls.

Major changes are on the horizon as telcos nationwide are gearing up to phase out 3G starting next month.

Telstra will be the first to shut down its 3G network on Aug. 31, followed by Optus on Sept. 1. TPG/Vodafone has already completed its 3G shutdown earlier this year.

This means that individuals relying solely on 3G devices will lose the ability to use their network or contact emergency services.

To check if their mobile devices may be affected by the 3G transition, customers of Telstra, Optus, and TPG/Vodafone can text “3” to “3498” and receive an immediate response.

Telstra has emphasized that without Voice over LTE (VoLTE) compatibility, even 4G data users will lose the ability to make voice calls after the 3G shutdown.

Affected customers will be contacted and advised by Telstra to upgrade to a VoLTE-capable 4G/5G device before the deadline.

Optus plans to offer 20,000 free mobile phones to eligible customers to ensure they stay connected and can make emergency calls post the 3G switchover.

The government, along with industry efforts, is working to identify and inform impacted individuals, highlighting the importance of upgrading devices before the transition deadline.

Users will receive notifications and reminders from their providers, encouraging them to check their devices and take necessary actions. Additionally, Optus research has identified specific areas with a high number of incompatible devices, particularly those with diverse language speakers.

It is crucial for everyone to assess their devices, communicate with others about the transition, and seek guidance from service providers for any further information or assistance.
