Pablo Rodriguez Steps Down from Role as Transport Minister, Plans to Serve as Independent
Pablo Rodriguez has resigned from his position as federal transport minister and will serve as an Independent MP until he launches his campaign for the leadership of the Liberal Party in Quebec.
“I have informed the prime minister of my resignation as Canada’s transport minister and Quebec lieutenant effective immediately,” Rodriguez announced during a press conference in Ottawa on Sept. 19.
“I have also decided to sit as an Independent MP until the launch of the leadership campaign next January.”
Rodriguez said sitting as an independent would allow him to set his “own priorities” instead of “defending the priorities of the government.” Rodriguez said he is now focused on building his team and vision for Quebecers.
Rodriguez has served as transport minister since the last cabinet shuffle in 2023, and has also been Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Quebec lieutenant, acting as the main adviser and spokesperson on issues relating to the province.
