Palestinian Protesters Face Charges Following Political Disruption at University of Queensland
It has been reported that two 53-year-old men are facing charges of unregulated high-risk activity.
Following an alleged political disturbance on a roof at the University of Queensland’s St Lucia campus, two pro-Palestinian activists have been charged. The incident was captured in footage shared on social media, showing the men holding a sign that reads, “University of Queensland, stop funding genocide.”
This comes amidst a global movement where camps are being set up on campuses worldwide to protest the ongoing Israel-Hamas war in the Middle East.
Queensland police confirmed that the two men, both 53 years old, have each been charged with unregulated high-risk activity.
The men were reportedly observed on the roof of a building at the educational facility following reports of a political disturbance around 3 p.m. on Carmody Road, St Lucia.
Both individuals have been released on bail and are scheduled to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on June 6.
Social media images show several other activists with pro-Palestinian flags and signs. These activists are urging the University of Queensland to disclose and divest from all companies and institutions supplying weapons to Israel. They also demand that the university cut ties with weapons manufacturers and foreign defense departments, and end academic, business, and cultural relations with Israel until the conflict is resolved.
Organizers stated, “As Australian Palestinian fathers, we have watched for more than 225 days as Israel has committed atrocity after atrocity against our communities’ family and friends in Gaza and throughout Palestine, mostly affecting children.”
The drama surrounding encampments continues across Australia, with the University of Queensland sending a warning to organizers for chanting the word “intifada.”
Students at the University of Melbourne have refused to leave the Arts West building at the Parkville Campus and have organized activities in defiance.
