Parliament to Introduce Hate Speech Laws
Amid the graffiti of ‘Jew die’ on a Jewish school, the Australian government is developing hate speech laws with criminal penalties for those who vilify based on race, sexuality, gender, disability, or religion.
Reports confirm that Attorney General Mark Dreyfus is working on this legislation, as communicated by Labor Communications Minister Michelle Rowland on May 26.
The government is taking a stand against “hatred or abuse” based on race or religion, especially in light of the recent incident at Mount Scopus Memorial College where hateful messages sparked fear among the students.
Michelle Rowland emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing hate speech both within the attorney general and communications portfolios.
In response to the concerning events at the Jewish school, she expressed her personal distress and resolve to take action to fill gaps in current legislation based on evidence.
At this stage, details of the penalties are being actively discussed as the government finalizes the laws, ensuring effectiveness in addressing hate speech.
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has also called for stronger hate speech laws to combat anti-Semitism following the attacks on the Jewish community.

President Philip Zajac of the Jewish Community Council of Victoria called for greater action from the government in response to a recent death threat directed at Victorian children of the Jewish faith.
Various political figures, including Shadow Education Minister Sarah Henderson and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, have condemned these acts of hate, calling for unified action to combat anti-Semitic incitement.
