Peter Mandelson Appointed as Ambassador to the United States.

Despite previously calling Donald Trump a ‘bully and a mercantalist,’ New Labour grandee has been appointed as the UK’s top diplomat in Washington.

Lord Peter Mandelson, a prominent figure in New Labour and a staunch supporter of the EU, has been named the next UK ambassador to the United States as President-elect Donald Trump prepares for his second term.

Mandelson, who served under Sir Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, will take over from the current Ambassador, Dame Karen Pierce.

“It is a great honor to serve the country in this role,” Mandelson stated.

He continued, “We face challenges in Britain, but also significant opportunities. I look forward to working with the government to capitalize on those opportunities, both economically and in terms of national security, and to enhance our longstanding alliance with the United States.”

His appointment comes at a crucial time as President Trump is set to begin his second term, raising questions about the future of trade relations between the US and UK under his administration.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer expressed his delight in appointing Mandelson, citing his vast experience as a key asset.

The prime minister emphasized the importance of the relationship with the US, stating that Mandelson’s experience will strengthen the partnership between the two nations.

Criticism of Trump

In a 2018 article for the London Evening Standard, Mandelson criticized Trump, describing him as a ‘bully and a mercantilist’ who prioritizes US gains in trade at the expense of others. He argued for a more inclusive trade policy that benefits all parties involved.

Starmer also addressed concerns over potential tariffs from the US under the new administration, emphasizing the need to avoid such measures.

Former British ambassador to the US, Lord Kim Darroch, praised Mandelson’s appointment, stating that he believed Mandelson was the right choice for the role.

Mandelson, known as the ‘Prince of Darkness’ for his behind-the-scenes work in New Labour, expressed a preference for a new relationship with the US rather than a special one. He played a significant role in the campaign to remain in the EU and advocated for a second referendum following the Brexit vote.

With a controversial past, Mandelson has been both praised and criticized for his pro-business stance and his involvement in various scandals during his political career.

His appointment as the UK’s ambassador to the US is seen as a strategic move to enhance economic and security interests with one of the UK’s closest allies.

‘A New Relationship’

Mandelson, a key figure in New Labour, has advocated for a new relationship with the US, emphasizing the need for stronger ties between the two nations. His extensive experience in trade policy, including his role as EU trade commissioner, is expected to be valuable in working with the Trump administration.
