Poilievre Acknowledges Only Two Genders, Saying ‘I’m Only Aware of Two’

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has stated his belief in the existence of only two genders, responding to a question about U.S. President Donald Trump’s executive order recognizing two sexes.

During an interview with CP24, Poilievre was asked if he would implement a similar gender policy as the U.S. president. “As far as I’m aware, there are only two [genders],” Poilievre replied. He emphasized the importance of a government that respects individuals’ freedom to make their own choices without interference.

Trump’s executive order, signed after his inauguration on Jan. 20, acknowledges two sexes, male and female, as unchangeable realities grounded in fundamental truth. The order also vows to uphold sex-specific laws to support this reality and cautions against legal efforts to permit men to identify as women for access to single-sex spaces like women’s shelters and showers.

“Efforts to erase the biological truth of sex fundamentally harm women by undermining their dignity, safety, and well-being,” the order states.

Trump has also issued executive orders to eliminate federal programs and preferences based on race, sex, gender, or other immutable characteristics, along with rescinding previous U.S. Department of Education guidance on gender ideology.

In early 2024, Poilievre criticized the use of puberty blockers for Canadians under 18, urging the government to protect children and allow them to make important decisions once they reach adulthood.

Responding to questions about Alberta’s policies on medical transition for children, Poilievre expressed his stance on restricting gender reassignment surgeries for those under 18 and limiting puberty blockers and hormone therapies for those under 15. The policies also require parental consent for addressing children by alternative pronouns or names.

When asked about supporting policies mandating parental permission for teaching children about gender, sexuality, and sexual orientation, Poilievre deferred to the provinces, suggesting that schools focus on basics and leave discussions about LGBT and gender topics to parents.
