Poilievre Advocates for Adoption Over Abortion in Conservative Government

A Conservative government, as stated by party leader Pierre Poilievre in a letter to a pro-life group member, would prioritize promoting adoption over banning abortion.

In a letter dated Sept. 11 to Dan Plemel of Campaign Life Coalition, Poilievre expressed his belief that legislation supporting adoption and aiding pregnant women in crisis would bring about more positive outcomes than outlawing abortion.

In response to a letter from Plemel on Sept. 6 suggesting a change in Poilievre’s stance from pro-life to pro-choice, Poilievre assured that pro-life individuals are welcomed within the Conservative Party.

“The Conservative Party of Canada is a big tent with a strong tradition of free votes of conscience, and I intend to maintain this status quo,” Poilievre’s letter, shared with The Epoch Times, stated.

“I believe focusing on bills that promote adoption and help pregnant women through crisis would do greater good,” Poilievre wrote in his letter that articulated his opposition to government actions targeting organizations assisting pregnant women.

Conservative MP Leslyn Lewis, a pro-life advocate, has been vocal about the potential loss of charity status for pregnancy centers due to anti-abortion stances. The Liberals’ election platform included measures aimed at organizations offering misleading counseling to women regarding pregnancy options.

Poilievre emphasized in his letter that his government would not propose or pass laws prohibiting abortions, affirming his commitment to not regulate abortion.

Speaking on behalf of Poilievre, spokesperson Sebastian Skamski reiterated the Conservative Party’s long-standing stance of refraining from supporting abortion-related legislation, as outlined in the party’s policy book.

“A Conservative Government will not support any legislation to regulate abortion,” Skamski stated. The party’s philosophy centers on allowing Canadians to make personal decisions regarding various aspects of their lives, including relationships, families, and beliefs.

Skamski further mentioned the party’s backing of adoption and assisting parents opting for adoption, citing Poilievre’s personal account of being adopted by school teachers.

Campaign Life Coalition’s Pete Baklinski expressed gratitude for Poilievre’s support for pregnant women and pro-life pregnancy centers while indicating that the proposed plans fall short of addressing the needs of the pre-born.

Baklinski also highlighted the impact of pro-abortion policies on Canada’s declining fertility rate, emphasizing the necessity for pro-family measures to counteract population decline.

The discussion surrounding abortion has led to criticisms from the Liberal Party, accusing Conservatives of opposing abortion rights. The Tories have dismissed these claims as attempts to divert attention from the Liberals’ performance in opinion polls.
