Police in British Columbia to provide ‘important’ update on Nijjar murder case
Homicide police in British Columbia are set to provide a “significant update” on the murder of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, amidst reports of arrests being made in the case.
Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc has been briefed by the RCMP on the developments in the case, which had sparked allegations from Ottawa of Indian government interference in the killing last year.
LeBlanc stated that the case is likely to proceed to criminal courts for resolution.
According to reports by CBC, alleged members of a hit squad have been apprehended, and investigators are exploring potential connections to three other homicides.
Mr. Nijjar, an advocate for a separate Sikh homeland in India, was fatally shot in his vehicle outside a gurdwara in Surrey, B.C., in June last year.
During a session in the House of Commons in September, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau mentioned credible intelligence linking the murder to the Indian government, leading to a diplomatic dispute that resulted in India suspending visa issuance to Canadians for two months.
India has consistently denied any involvement in Mr. Nijjar’s killing.
